*This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review at my request.Marian Spritz is in summer school due to poor grades, and still struggling with spells with her best friend Sal and Endrik, the handsome boy, seems to like Marian where Minx, the mean girl, is jealous of their flirting. Along with their Last Chance Project, helping a fictional ward, they will also have to help a real live being. Should something happen, they are to use their group to help them. Twelve students now have their projects, due in three weeks. The song for help sings through a Glistens veins, when the veil is lifted which their professor does. When Marian's ward asks her to keep her troubles a secret, and ward to guardian secret, it complicates Marian's school project as she's to work with Sal and Endrik to finish, and now can't.
Julie is a new voice for me. And listening to her in the first chapter, I liked her. She does different attitudes with slight voice differences for us to easily separate and get a feel for the characters. This is something that really pops with audiobooks, we don't get when reading. But I think there is a slight ting to Julie's voice, almost an echo. It's hard to tell and could be nothing, or could fit with the fairy feel. For the most part, Julie flows the words as she narrates. However there are moments where she feels as she's working to enunciate the words properly and clearly.
This is a short story at just over 2 hours audio. It feels like a lovely little story for young adults, in middle school and up, to read/listen to. It brings to the front that promises are made and you honor them, but it's also good to talk to others. That others can help. Sometimes, working as a group is better than alone. And, sometimes, helping those that are not so nice means a great deal to them.
I like Marian. She worries and feels bad, but she's also not perfect. Her attention strays when in class, causing her to miss information from class and such. But this feels like a normal person. But when she learns she's got a ward, she does worry about that person, even if it's someone she never expected.
Enrik is the possible boy distraction, love interest, in this story. He sounds sweet. He's also concerned for Marian when he sees her during her moments that she feels the song. Marian is determined to not let him be a distraction, I like this take on her relationship with Enrik.
Sal is so worried. She comes across as whiny at times, but that's her personality. She's so stressed over the great chance of failing this summer course and never becoming a Glisten. She's so worried that she doesn't want Enrik and Marian to become romantically involved as it would be a distraction from their projects, and they'll fail. And much on her mind with her father's disappearance.
One thing I find cool, it's near my home town! They are in Pennsylvania and near the Allegheny River. Pittsburgh is even mentioned. Cool beans!
It was a cute short story.

Glistens (Audible Audio Edition) Chess Desalls Julie Hinton LLC Czidor Lore Books Reviews
Delightful fairy story with solid, interesting plot. Well written and edited. The action moves along at a good pace with the added bonus of YA romance. A "clean" read with no cursing. I would read this author again. Author Felicia Mires
My review is based on the Audiobook. Glistens was a fun listen. I loved the ideas and world the Author created. I believe this could be made into a full length novel and possible series if done correctly. I enjoyed Julie Hinton as narrator and I look forward to more from this author & narrator.
I gave it a five because of a few reasons. O e, it was exceptionally written. Second, there was a tiny bit of romance that was sweet. Third, *may be spoil alert, but it tells a story of how we can assume something about someone, that may be totally not true, it showed compassion, friendship and team work when needed. It's a short book, but well worth the read!
This is a sweet and uplifting read about a shape shifting firefly. Having to choose between a passing grade and the call for protection. Mari decides keeping her charge alive is much more important than the Last Chance project needed to advance to become a guardian fairy.
This is a great story about choosing another's needs over your own wants~
A sweet story of friendship and caring for fellow man... or woman... or firefly. Great for any age group from young to old. I'd started several books recently that I just couldn't get into. This one immediately caught my interest and held it. What a relief!
This was my favorite in the Spellbound trilogy and I couldn't help but gush over Chess Desalls' writing. It’s my first time to read a fantasy story about fireflies and world they lived in. As a child, I have always wondered about them, about the light that they carry wherever they go and how they appear when at daytime. Marian Spritz is great character, she’s got a good heart for those who are in need, even if the one calling for her help is a fellow Glisten who was never good to her. I liked that she had real friends she could count on, even though they were at odds sometimes. The part where she had to hide the truth about her ward and had to conceal her identity at the same time consumed her.
I thought the story would fall flat given the shorter amount of pages in the book. But no, I end up finishing the tale with a satisfied smile on my face. I was clearly spellbound by the Glistens. I love this story so much, I demand Chess Dessals to write a trilogy of this.
Cute short story about helping others. The characters seem more of a YA age but the book read more like MG. There's fairies(Glistens) in summer school trying to make up work to insure that they....pass? I wasn't sure since they ARE Glistens but are also trying to BE Glistens if passing the class meant they would get to be like Glisten+ and if losing meant they stay the way they are or actually get bumped down to like human status.
Anyway, we have a class of Glistens who are clearly not at the top of their game and now they have one last chance to redeem themselves. They have to feel the call of their charge (supposed to be human) and help them.
We get a little bit of sweet, minor romance, friendships, and of course a little bit of intrigue. Marian hears the call first but when she answers it... it's not a human but another Glisten. I wasn't sure how that worked since I was under the impression it was a human/fairy thing.
Anyway, we see her work out how to help and trying to do it alone since she makes a promise to her charge not to tell. An easy read that you can get through in no time.
